China Urges Partnership Over Rivalry with India, Says Wang Yi

BEIJING, Aug 19 – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has emphasized the importance of fostering cooperation rather than competition between China and India, urging both nations to view one another as strategic partners instead of rivals.

Speaking during a meeting with his Indian counterpart in New Delhi, Wang Yi stressed the need for a “correct strategic understanding” between the two neighbors, according to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry. He underscored that both countries, as major emerging economies and populous nations, share not only geographical proximity but also common responsibilities toward regional stability and global development.

Wang Yi said that Beijing is prepared to work with New Delhi under the principle of cordiality and mutual benefit, aiming to resolve differences through dialogue while strengthening areas of shared interest. He highlighted the significance of cooperation in trade, investment, climate change, and multilateral platforms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Despite recent border tensions and strained ties, the Chinese foreign minister noted that competition should not define the relationship. Instead, he called for constructive engagement, mutual respect, and efforts to expand collaboration in ways that can positively impact both countries’ populations.

Observers believe the message reflects Beijing’s intent to stabilize ties at a time when both governments are under pressure to focus on economic recovery and regional challenges. India, meanwhile, has been cautious in its engagement, balancing its relations with China alongside growing strategic ties with the United States and other Western partners.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers comes ahead of several high-level multilateral gatherings in Asia, where cooperation—or continued friction—between China and India could significantly shape regional dynamics.
